Ali Zakeri’s (b. 1959, Iran) paintings and drawings range from abstract readings of nature to expressive renderings of figures in both imagined and actual surroundings. His years of experimenting with the human body in different states and positions and dynamic, suggestive compositions culminate in The Eliminated or The Sons of God, a series of works depicting different scenes of boxing. However, by removing the audience and all glamorous features of the boxing arena, Zakeri makes the violence and despair in this sport universal, inviting us to see the fighters, the referee and the boxing ring as metaphors for vaster notions such as the age-old story of the human fight for survival on earth, told vividly through broad and bold brushstrokes.
